Useful class information

Our reading day is on a Friday. Please make sure you bring your book bags to school on this day.

Children will need to bring their book bags to school on a Friday. Once they are on a stage reading book we ask that you make a comment in your child’s reading diary, letting us know how they’ve read at home. Children will share their reading book with an adult at school on a Friday and a new book will be given as appropriate for your child to read at home throughout the week. We would really appreciate your support with this in ensuring children continue to develop their reading skills and love of reading. It is important to provide your child with lots of opportunities to read at home throughout the week.

The children will also have lots of opportunities to read and explore a range of texts, books and stories throughout the week at school. We know that frequent storytelling and reading sessions at home with an adult are key to a child’s success in reading and also to success in many other areas of the curriculum. Children will need sufficient support and encouragement to keep the focus on the story and it’s meaning and should avoid getting too bogged down in decoding print. Offer sufficient support to make reading fun and easy. Fluency will come in time!

*Book bags may be purchased from school at a cost of £4.50*.

Spellings this term are on a Friday.

Once children have successfully completed their third reading book they will be sent home with a set of spellings to learn (Some Yr1 pupils may already be on spellings). These spelling words are for your child to keep working on and they will be used in our spelling session on a Friday.

To ensure your child makes progress with their spellings, please allow lots of opportunities to practise these words at home and help them identify the words in their reading books and around them. The easiest way to practise spellings is through some fun games so if you would like some advice on suitable games then please ask myself or Miss Richards.

P.E is on a Tuesday and a Thursday.

P.E for Dosbarth Enfys will take place on a Tuesday (indoor session) and Thursday (outdoor session). Please send a P.E kit (black shorts and t-shirt) in a small drawstring bag labelled with your child’s name to be kept in school. It will be sent home during holiday time for washing. Please make sure your child wears school tracksuit and trainers on our P.E days for our outdoor P.E session and for ease of changing when it’s our indoor P.E session.

All of the children will be involved in games/other physical activities outdoors regularly throughout the week and therefore it is very important that they always wear suitable school shoes and footwear to school (ie no high heels/ open toe sandals etc).

Snack time  Children will have opportunity to have a snack during the morning session. We ask that children bring a small piece of fruit to have during snack time. As we are a healthy school we ask that children only bring fruit for their morning snack. Please ensure fruit is appropriately prepared for your child to eat, i.e. grapes cut in half lengthways, apples cut into pieces if needed etc. Children will also be offered a drink of milk or water at snack time, please ensure children bring a small water bottle to school to be kept in class throughout the day.

Lunch  Children are able to have a school dinner, if they would like to or if you would prefer your child to bring a packed lunch, please make sure it is brought in a small lunch bag as space is very limited. We promote healthy eating at school and request that you send a healthy lunch – no sweets, chocolate bars or fizzy drinks are allowed.

Rubbish and waste from packed lunches will be sent back home, therefore, please ensure lunch boxes and bags are emptied and cleaned thoroughly every day at home.
